by Portland Museum
A Day in the Life of an Archaeologist – inside and out. On Thursday 29th February at the C2000 Hall at 3pm.
We are over the moon to be hosting museum trustee and seasoned archaeologist,
Nance Grace.
Nance will talk about all aspects of archaeology, including excavation, what
archaeologists do with the finds, archaeology in buildings and different scientific
techniques. The talk will be illustrated with pictures of excavations and finds from
sites that Nance has excavated mostly in Dorset, from Bronze Age burial mounds on
Golden Cap, Civil war finds at Corfe Castle and WWII sites at Kingston Lacy and
Hive Beach.
Nance came down to Weymouth from West Yorkshire to study archaeology at the
Dorset Institute of Higher Education in 1983. After she graduated her first job was
working on excavations at Maiden Castle, and in Wales on a Roman site. In 1986
she started working for the National Trust as an archaeologist at Corfe Castle, then
spent 37 years working across Dorset and the southwest for them, she finally retired
from the National Trust last year. She now works part-time for the Portable
Antiquities Scheme helping to record metal detectorist finds, leaving time to help with
the collections at Portland Museum, where she is a valued trustee.
Tickets to our talks are £5.00 or £3.50 for Friends of Portland Museum.
