Earl of Abergavenny pop up on Portland
by Portland Museum
Portland Museum is pleased to announce that we are bringing our Earl of Abergavenny pop up museum to Southwell Business Park on August 21st from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
On show will be some of the most intriguing objects retrieved from the ship that hit the infamous Shambles Sandbank in 1805 and sank just off Weymouth Bay with the loss of over 250 lives.
The collection includes the captains cufflinks, pieces of eight, copper ingots and the personal effects of passengers and crew. All these items will be presented by our specialist team of Earl of Abergavenny volunteers who will be on hand to talk about this amazing collection of finds and the story behind one of Portland’s most famous shipwrecks.
This is a great opportunity to find out more about Portland Museum’s National Lottery funded Diving into the Digital Archives of the Earl of Abergavenny project. Phase 2 of this project will begin in September and if you’d like to join us then come along and meet the gang – or just come along for the ride!
The event is part of Portland Rotary’s Dog Show where there will be lots more local stalls, refreshments and fun to be had on the day.
