Heritage Open Days: Astounding Inventions!
by Portland Museum
As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days theme of Astounding Inventions, we will be presenting two unique innovations connected to the island’s history, Sunday 11th September.
Entrance to the museum will be free for everyone throughout the day when we will be showcasing Marshall’s Mechanical Televisor: an early type of television that played a crucial part in the development of audio-visual devices. Museum Trustee, David Carter will present a 20 minute talk on the televisor at 11:00 am in Marie Stopes Cottage.
Following on from David’s talk there will be a presentation by Museum Volunteer, Stella New on the fascinating mechanical pencils found on the East India Company ship Earl of Abergavenny. This talk will take place at 12:00 midday in the museum garden, weather permitting. (In the event of inclement weather, an alternative museum room will be made available)
