Mammoths at the Museum – A Month of Ice Age Wonders
by Portland Museum
If you’ve spotted a mammoth or two around Portland lately, don’t worry, it’s just our theme of
the month. Our special temporary exhibit, Mammoths at the Museum, brings the
extraordinary Ice Age fossils discovered by Sally and Neville Hollingworth right here to
Portland. These are the very finds featured in the BBC documentary Attenborough and The
Mammoth Graveyard, and it’s a rare chance to see them up close.
Mammoth Eye Spy Challenge
It seems the mammoths have been running riot in the museum and we need your help to
track them down. For just £1, young explorers can take part in our Mammoth Eye Spy
Challenge. Each participant receives an activity leaflet, follows the clues, and searches the
museum for our runaway mammoths. Complete the challenge and you’ll “unearth” your very
own fossil to take home as a reward.
Unearthing the Mammoth Graveyard – A Talk with Sally & Neville Hollingworth
Thursday 23 April 2026
2:30pm–4pm
C2000 Hall, Straits
Ever wondered what it’s like to uncover an Ice Age mammoth? Join Sally and Neville
Hollingworth — the very couple who made the discovery — for a fascinating
behind‑the‑scenes talk.
They’ll be sharing:
• What it was like to find the site
• How the BBC documentary was made
• How scientists examine Ice Age discoveries
• What we know about mammoths: how they lived, and how they died
The talk covers everything from filming with Sir David Attenborough to the archaeological
digs and research that followed. The BBC documentary is still available on iPlayer if you’d
like a refresher before the event.
