by Portland Museum
Join Portland Museum for a fascinating talk by local historian Tony Flux exploring the life and legacy of Sir James Thornhill, one of Dorset’s most remarkable figures. Born in Weymouth in 1675, Thornhill rose to prominence as court painter to King George I and was knighted in 1720. He became celebrated as England’s greatest Baroque painter, leaving behind a dazzling portfolio of work that continues to inspire today.
Among his masterpieces are the magnificent decorative schemes at Greenwich Hospital and the breathtaking paintings inside the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, works that secured his reputation as a visionary artist of national importance. Thornhill also served as Member of Parliament for Weymouth, demonstrating his commitment not only to art but also to public life. His family connections extended his influence further, most notably through his son‑in‑law William Hogarth, who carried forward his artistic legacy.
