Earl of Abergavenny Show and Tell
by Portland Museum
A happy Monday in May saw our first Earl of Abergavenny Show and Tell event at Wyke Regis Library.
Our museum team presented a talk and showed some intriguing collection items from the shipwreck of the Earl of Abergavenny along with some of the amazing 3D digital models that our project volunteers have been producing.
The library as a venue was a significant one as it’s just across the road from Wyke Regis Church. In 1805, when the Earl of Abergavenny was lost, the church was used as a mark on navigation maps of the time and is the burial site for those people that were lost the night the ship was wrecked.
The event was part of Wyke Regis Library’s Love your Library series and with a lovely crowd of people, friendly staff and more tea, coffee and biscuits that you can shake a stick at, we can’t wait to do another!
In November 2021, Portland Museum won a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant to launch a digital volunteering initiative and break down barriers to heritage.
Working with partners, MSDS Marine and MSDS Heritage and the Nautical Archaeology Society, the museum is training volunteers in digital recording techniques to share 3D images and information on the finds from the Earl of Abergavenny shipwreck with the wider community.
